Australian Chess Olympiad Teams Announced
By Paul Power
Australia will bring talent and experience to the Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September.
Leading the Open Team on board one is 23-year-old Temur Kuybokarov, who finished in the top third of the 2023 Grand Swiss Tournament, which attracted almost all the world's top 100 players, losing only one game and beating Gukesh D, the challenger for the World Championship late this year.
Bobby Cheng, 27 year old former World U12 Champion, plays board 2. Cheng played board 3 in the Chennai Olympiad 2022, scoring 8/10. Rishi Sardana, 26 year old current Australian Champion, brings strong recent form to board 3. Former Australian Champion and veteran of six Olympiads, 37-year-old Zong-Yuan Zhao brings solid experience to board 4. Board 5 sees the return of seven-time Olympian, 39-year-old David Smerdon, who played board 1 in Istanbul (2012), Troms0 (2014) and Baku, Azerbaijan (2016), where he drew with World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Non-playing Team Captain is Jack Rodgers, as he was in Chennai 2022.
The Women's Team is headed by Julia Ryjanova on board 1, the current Oceania Women's Chess Champion. Ryjanova played board 1 in the Chennai Olympiad, 2022, playing 10 of 11 games and losing only one. Ryjanova represented Australia on board 2 at the Batumi (Georgia) Olympiad, 2018, after changing federations 2017.
Jilin Zhang, placed second to Ryjanova in the 2023 Oceania Zonal, who plays board 2, represented Australia in Chennai and Batumi. Giang Nguyen, a veteran of seven Olympiads, scoring 6/9 in Chennai, plays board 3. Zhiyuan Shen, who scored a solid draw with Grandmaster Mitrabha at the Bangkok Open in April, plays board 4. Alaina Vincent, who was placed equal third in the 2023 Women’s Oceania Zonal, plays board 5. Non-playing Team Captain is International Master Mihajlo Radovanovic.
ACF Notices
ACF OLYMPIAD APPEAL – 45TH CHESS OLYMPIAD
The biennial Chess Olympiad is one of the world’s largest sporting events, and the premier teams event on the global chess calendar. After a succession of Asian venues in recent years, the Olympiad returns to Europe – Budapest, the Hungarian capital, is hosting the 45th Olympiad from 10-23 September.
Australia has performed remarkably well against the rest of the world. We have contested every Olympiad since 1968, our open team tying for 25th place (of 187) and our women tying for 35th (of 161) at the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai.
Again, this year Australia will be one of the expected 190 nations competing, fielding an open and a women’s team (each five players plus captain) of our best available players, together with a Head of Delegation representing ACF at the FIDE Congress.
…but there’s a catch
…the Australian nemesis, the tyranny of distance – Australia is a long way from just about anywhere. As airlines recover from the Covid-19 downturn, the days of cheap fares are yet to return. By departing on 6th September and delaying the return flight till 24th September, China Eastern is the best available (at mid-March, but fares change almost daily), with a $1561 return fare from Sydney via Shanghai to Budapest – 28 hours outbound and 36 hours homeward bound (via Wuhan, Xi-An and Shanghai).
While other national teams receive government support, our teams must meet their own travel costs.
That’s where you come in. The teams need your support to represent us. Please give what you can to the appeal.
All donations will be acknowledged on the ACF web site and in the ACF Newsletter. The Australian Chess Federation will match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to half of the total cost, leaving an estimated $11,000 to be raised, including incidental costs such as FIDE registration and entry fees; and uniform costs.

FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.
AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATIVE INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR CHESS TOURNAMENTS
Any inquiries can be sent to Australian Junior Chess Coordinator, Henry Slater-Jones, at henryslaterjones@gmail.com.
ACF POSITIONS
The following ACF Council-appointed positions are vacant. Councillors and others wishing to inquire or register interest in appointment to one or more of these positions are welcome to email executive@auschess.org.au or phone 0409 525 963 at any time.
Advertising Manager. It has been suggested that, ideally, the appointee would be a person with an interest in coordinating advertising in both the ACF newsletter and website, and at or in connection with ACF championships, the Grand Prix and other major ACF events.
Assistant Secretary. This position and the currently filled position of Assistant Treasurer were created to provide opportunities for younger administrators to experience the joys of chess administration at national level.
Archives Director. Generally, the Archives Director would be expected to gather, maintain and build a repository of records and documents that might be of historical interest or value, or which might help in confirming the organisation’s status or credibility for a variety of purposes.
Trophies Officer. Responsibilities relating to trophies and other mementos to be presented in connection with ACF Championships and other events.
ACF FUNDING SUPPORT PROGRAM
The application deadline for activities commencing between 1 September 2024 and 28 February 2025 is 30 June 2024. Application forms and related information are available on request to executive@auschess.org.au.

2024 ACT Championships
By Shaun Press (chessexpress)
IM Junta Ikeda has won his 11th ACT Championship, repeating the 7/7 score he achieved in last year’s tournament. His round 6 game against FM Michael Kethro left him a point in front with 1 round to play, but a win over NSW junior Reyaansh Chakrabarty in round 7 kept his 100% record intact. Second place was shared between FM Michael Kethro, CM Lalit Prasad, and ACT junior, Masaki Horikawa, on 5.5. Horikawa started the tournament seeded 20th, so his 2nd place finish was quite an achievement.
Oladoyan Fasakin and Somon Vos shared the Under 2000 prize, while the Under 1600 prize was shared between Simon Louie, Jerry Cheng, Lohit Hegde, Aarav Rawat and Olamide Fasakin. Padma Gyalpo was the best FIDE unrated player.
While the first 3 days went pretty smoothly, day 4 was filled with drama. On opening the venue, it became apparent there was no power. Round 6 was started while the cause was investigated. It turns out that there was an 'unscheduled power outage' in the suburb, which not only meant no lights in the playing area, but no live game broadcast as well. Fortunately, there was enough natural light in the venue to allow the round to proceed. With round 7 starting at 2:45pm, it soon became clear that if the lighting was not restored, the games would finish in darkness. Games were moved to areas closer to the windows. Even this proved unsatisfactory, and the organisers were reduced to trying to light the inside of the venue with car headlights from the outside. At 5:35pm (35 minutes past sunset) the lights did come on, 8.5 hours after they went out. There were half a dozen games still in progress, and the tournament eventually finished under playable conditions.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
Zwischenzug! By Natasha Regan & Matt Ball, published by Chessable, 280 pages.
A puzzle book with a fun theme.
The German title sounds impressive, but it is perhaps better known as the in-between move, intermezzo or the intermediate move. This allows the British authors to present hundreds of puzzles with this entertaining idea. It means it is often not a check that starts the winning line, so you have to think that little bit harder.
English grandmaster Michael Adams provides an excellent foreword and provides an example of Zwischenzug from one of his own games from the 1980s against Anand. I was in the tournament room at the time and there was general amazement that the Indian was winning with just thirty minutes on the clock. They might have been more impressed if they had noticed he had turned up twenty minutes late.
This chess course was originally made as a video course on Chessable. There are times that is rather evident as several pages have a lot of blank space which I am sure the authors would have been happy to fill with extra puzzles if asked. The majority of the examples will be familiar to those who love puzzle books but there is plenty of welcome prose to explain the solution and to also offer hints and tips to win more games.
There is a small selection of colour photos, which is always welcome so you can put a face to some of the players featured.
An absorbing puzzle rush with a twist.
Looking Back
Australian Championship June 1906
from Bob Meadley’s ‘A History of Australian Chess’
William Samuel Viner (1881-1933) was coached by Julius Leigh Jacobsen (Australian Champion 1899-1900) from about age 16 at the Sydney School of Arts Chess Club, but then left for Boulder, Western Australia, ca late 1897/early 1898 with his father. He returned to Sydney in 1899, but went back to Perth in 1900, and became champion of WA also in 1901, 1903, 1905. The Victorian player Charles G.M. Watson was working for an insurance company in Perth and a match for the Australian Championship was arranged.
Perth Chess Club and its President A.E. Coleman handled the details, and he acted as Umpire for the match which started in June 1906. Viner was 25, Watson 28 and the 1905 Victorian Champion - undefeated, 3 points clear of Gundersen. Excellent credentials for them both.
Viner won +7-1=3 and was Australian Champion. Jacobsen was very pleased for his “one-time pupil”. So was the Perth Chess Club, which gave him a travelling chess set and a glass tantalus (decanter stand) for the most brilliant game - the final one.
