FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.
AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATIVE INTERNATIONAL JUNIORS CHESS TOURNAMENTS
Any inquiries can be sent to ACF Juniors Coordinator, Mr Hui Lam Teh tehhuilam@gmail.com, with cc to ACF Selections Director Tom Saltmarsh selections_director@auschess.org.au.
ACF POSITIONS
The following ACF Council-appointed positions are vacant. Councillors and others wishing to inquire or register interest in appointment to one or more of these positions are welcome to email executive@auschess.org.au or phone 0409 525 963 at any time.
Advertising Manager. It has been suggested that, ideally, the appointee would be a person with an interest in coordinating advertising in both the ACF newsletter and website, and at or in connection with ACF championships, the Grand Prix and other major ACF events.
Assistant Secretary. This position and the currently filled position of Assistant Treasurer were created to provide opportunities for younger administrators to experience the joys of chess administration at national level.
Archives Director. Generally, the Archives Director would be expected to gather, maintain and build a repository of records and documents that might be of historical interest or value, or which might help in confirming the organisation’s status or credibility for a variety of purposes.
Trophies Officer. Responsibilities relating to trophies and other mementos to be presented in connection with ACF Championships and other events.
ACF FUNDING SUPPORT PROGRAM
The application deadline for activities commencing between 1 September 2025 and 28 February 2026 is 30 June 2025. Application forms and related information are available on request to executive@auschess.org.au.

2025 ACT Rapidplay Teams Championship
By Shaun Press
The ACT Teams Rapidplay has grown in popularity over the last few years, with this year’s event attracting 21 teams. Some of the teams represented the local chess clubs (and were playing for the Larko Cup), some were just a group of friends (or friends’ dads), while others represented other chess organisations.
The clear winner of this year’s event was the Canberra Academy of Chess I team. They won all their matches and finished on 21.5/28. Tied for 2nd were the Purple Pineapple Pickers and the Tuggeranong Chess Club on 18. PPP took 2nd on countback, while third placed Tuggeranong took home the Larko Cup, their 2nd win in 3 years.
This year’s event was incredibly even on paper with the top 8 teams within 100 points of each other on average rating. It turned out that depth was what really counted with the winning team scoring 13.5/14 on boards 3 and 4.
One highlight was the pairing of the All-Star Kids team, against the All-Star Dads team. Each board pairing saw father play son, with the Kids winning 3-1. There were also a few internal club match ups, with these matches being played with as much venom as the top boards.
Board medals went to: Bd 1 CM Hui Li (PPP), Bd 2 Jonah Gear (CAC I), Bd 3 Jordan Brown (CAC I), Bd 4 Douglas Shuttleworth (CAC I). Best reserve was Hakoo Desai (Rosary), Biggest rating gain was Sanat Hegde (All Star Kids) and best female Varshini Mididuddi (Canberra Rising Stars).
Best team name was won by Yogis and the Beare. Many thanks to the Eastlakes Gungahlin Chess Club for hosting the event and the Eastlakes Gungahlin Club for providing the venue.

2025 Dubbo Open
By Shaun Press (chessexpress)
The 2025 Dubbo Open ended in a tie between Nikola Vujasin and Leon Kempen, on 5/6. Kempen had started the tournament with 4/4, including a win over top seed Blake Lynch, but a loss to Vujasin left a 3-way tie for 1st going into the final round. Vujasin defeated fellow leader Ron Groenhout with a strong attack on the top board, while Kempen beat Cameron McLean on board 2.
Groenhout had the consolation of sharing the Under 1600 prize with former tournament winner Fritz van der Wal on 4/6. Prakashbabu Radhakrishnan was the best U1300 player, while Cameron McClean and Sarayu Prakashbabu shared the best unrated prize.
Although this year’s event was smaller than previous years, it was an enjoyable, and very social tournament. As usual, the Dubbo Chess Club did a great job of organising the tournament, and with the support of the Dubbo RSL Club, were able to offer a generous prize pool. Next year’s event is likely to be on the weekend of the 14th and 15th of March, so plan your entries now!

Tasmanian Championships
By Miles Patterson
As a committed ‘chess tourist’, I never delay in booking my annual expedition to northern Tasmania. The Tasmanian Championships are usually held over the March long weekend, in or around Launceston. There are few better bases for spending some time exploring the sights and enjoying the hospitality of the area, including excellent wine-tasting, spectacular scenery, good food and of course some enjoyable chess.
Although it decides the Tasmanian championship titles (residents only), the tournament is open to all and visitors are welcome (and occasionally allowed to win the event, if not the title). I am always surprised that so few interstate players have discovered this great opportunity to mix chess with a pleasant holiday.
This year it was run, under Carl Gorka’s excellent direction, in the very picturesque town of Deloraine. Innovations this time included a female-only blitz tournament (for International Women’s Day), and a minor (U1400) tournament held alongside the main championships. There was a strong turnout, and everything ran smoothly with a typically laid-back atmosphere. The tournament was won by a German exchange student, with Will Rumley taking out a close-fought championship title ahead of the old guard.
Major Division Prize Winners

Ballarat Begonia Open
From reporting by Paul Power
Chess players from all Australian states joined with international players from Canada, Vietnam, New Zealand, India, Serbia, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Sri Lanka to contest the 59th Begonia Open tournament in Ballarat.
Melbourne International Master James Morris, 30, headed a field of 236, including Grandmaster Darryl Johansen, record holding winner of 14 Begonia Opens.
Five players top scored with 6/7 and share the title of 2025 Ballarat Begonia Open Champion: Ari Dale, Israel Yadao, James Morris, Luis Chan and Cheng Dai.
Ari Dale’s Round 5 game against Ray Yang:
Dale exited the Opening with a more compact pawn structure and executed a restricted Rook advance up the e-file
then doubled Rooks and slipped the Queen under the over-extended King pawn shelter.
White invaded the 7th rank
brought up the reserves
and forced a checkmate.
Epilogue: Grandmaster Ian Rogers gave expert commentary throughout the tournament. His new book "The World's Most Boring Chess Book: The Isolated d-Pawn" is soon to be available in Australia.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
The Real Paul Morphy
by Charles Hertan, (hardcover) published by New In Chess, 384 pages.
A feast of information about the legendary American player featuring games, illustrations and photos.
If you are still not sure whether you have seen him playing online at Titled Tuesday it worth noting that Morphy (1837-1884) dazzled the chess world with his brilliant attacking flair, winning a top tournament in New York before travelling to Europe where he beat the leading players. His fame arguably came about because he sensationally gave up chess at the age of 22 and retired from serious competition.
Hertan tries to balance the glory of the games with background information on the tale of the rise and rise of the American’s chess career. There is a nod to the 1976 title The Pride and Sorrow of Chess by David Lawson as being the ultimate biography. The preface mentions a sprinkling of books about the famous subject and tries to bring it bang up to date by mentioning the online historian Batgirl at http://edochess.ca/batgirl where there is a site devoted to our American idol. The obvious problem is that Hertan has not seen the primary sources and has to believe that it is all true. He is not a chess historian but inevitably it does mean mistakes can creep in if you are relying on other people for your facts and figures. Still, it does allow him to use contemporary letters and newspaper reports to convey the sense of wonder at Morphy’s stunning prowess.
There are plenty of entertaining games containing amazing sacrifices, but I am surprised that the author writes “I provide the first in-depth analysis of Morphy’s games during the computer era. Which means that in a nutshell you can throw most of the old analysis out of the window”. However, he might be right when it comes to books as from memory Chris Ward’s tome Genius of Paul Morphy came out in 1997 before the widespread use of computer analysis. Of course, keen players have put the games through chess software, but this may well be the first time it has appeared in book form.
It is difficult for anything new to emerge on such a well-known figure, but the author is a professional psychotherapist and tries to shed light on Morphy’s worsening mental state by analysing reports of his encounters with various people.
There is a new generation that has probably little knowledge of the star player, so this is the perfect introduction with interesting stories, some great chess and enough photos to bring the famous names to life. The combination of magical games and a large slice of history makes it a joy to read.
Looking Back
The Return of the Prodigal
By Bob Meadley
Over the years the Melbourne Chess Club (MCC) has had a great library at times, followed by a “Great Jumble Sale”. Ian Rogers rang me about one many decades ago and I was pleased to buy Purdy’s “The Return of Alekhine”. Just recently in an eBay sale I bought a photo of that great player reclining back in his chair at a simul event, I suspect with his eyes closed. Ian also sent me Roger Cook’s copy of Purdy’s “Chess Made Easy” and so it goes. Today at 85 I have to consider what to do with the Australian chess books that perhaps need to stay in Australia.
One that transcends the above is “The History of Chess” 1860 by Duncan Forbes, then Professor of Oriental Languages at King’s College London. It had been owned by the MCC and had a scratched out dedication that someone has part resurrected: “Melbourne Chess Club presented by …????? To ..???? May 23rd 1870”.
The book is liberally stamped with the MCC stamp on many pages. I have repaired it, as the spine was split, and it is now sound to read. I rebound the spine in a red binding which should have been brown but too late now.
In the 1970s/80s I bought many books from Dr. Meindert Niemeijer, the founder of the great Chess Library in The Hague. This one came here in July 1980 and how it left the MCC is anyone’s guess, but probably as a result of another “Jumble” clean-up. Why wasn’t it kept? Well, books on chess history can be dour affairs. The Dr. was a lovely man always trying to match books up with owners and previous owners and Narromine is a lot closer than Holland. So, who was the book presented by, and to whom and why? It was probably Andrew Burns, who was the Annual Handicap winer in 1866/67 & 69. He was President of the MCC in 1869/70.
I imagined the book’s first trip in 1870 when it was sold for 17/-. Then its trip to Holland for resale by Dr.N. and then its return trip here.
Books are not so popular anymore, but it should go to the State Library of Victoria where it would rest with many old friends. Or perhaps elsewhere? It will be a gift from this family to Melbourne. Any comments?
