FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.

2025 Doeberl Cup
From reporting by Shaun Press
The Doeberl Cup is over for another year, seeing over 370 players competing over the 2025 Easter Long Weekend at the Canberra Southern Cross Club in Woden.
Top seed GM Mitrabha Guha, 23, finished in 1st place, with 7.5/9 He went through the tournament undefeated, and played the other four GMs in the field along the way. Interestingly, the top five places were all occupied by the five GMs in the tournament, with GM Das Sayantan in 2nd on 7/9, and GM's Zhao, Antonio and Stopa all tying for 3rd on 6.5.
The 59-player field was tougher than last year, with the Premier being harder to qualify for. Despite this, Guha won when he needed to, and even though he only needed a draw in the final round, still pushed hard for a win (it was eventually drawn). His style suited the shortened tournament format (nine rounds over five days), keeping his positions under control until his opponent made a misstep.
For winning this year’s event Guha collects $5000 first prize. Das picked up $3000 for 2nd, as well as a 33% share of the Fighting Fun, alongside Zhao and Stopa.
In the Major division, the Saint Memorial Cup was won by Daniel Wang (AUS), with Balanandan Ayyappan (IND) in second place and Vincent Qiang (AUS) in third.
First place in the Minor went to Daniil Yelkhovsky (AUS), CM Jeff Cabilin (AUS) was second, and third place was Peter Doan (AUS). In the Mini, Mason Tay (AUS) took first place, with Padma Yonten Gyalpo (BHU) in second and Trent Kariyawasam taking third.
In the Under 1200s, Harvey Kuncoro took first place, with Dejun Sun in second, and James Nelson third. For the full list of awards and medallions, head over to the Draws & Results page on the Doeberl Cup website.
Overall, the tournament attracted 377 players across the five divisions, while the Saturday night blitz attracted 200 players across two sections.

FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship 2025

FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship 2025 report
by Leonid Sandler from Shanghai
Over the years I have attended many chess events around the globe but never a Women's World Championship Match. So an opportunity was too good to miss and I reported for Radio SBS from Shanghai.
The 2025 Women’s World Chess Championship match was held in two cities, Shanghai and Chongqing.
First 6 games were played in Shanghai, hometown of four times World Champion Ju Wenjun (34 years old) and other 6 games were scheduled for Chongqing, hometown of Tan Zhongyi (33 years old), the challenger. Prize fund of 500,000 euros were provided by various sponsors. Both ladies know each other very well and in 2018 Ju Wenjun won her title against then World Champion Tan Zhongyi.
After four games the scores were level and after that the World champion won 4 games in a row. Game number 9 was the last one and after a quick draw Ju Wenjun secured her 5th Women's World Champion title. The final result was 6.5-2.5.
Chess is popular in China with approximately 5 million people playing. However the most popular board game is probably Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) with about 60 million people playing. I saw many people enjoying a game or two of Chinese Chess in Shanghai's various parks.
The Women’s World Chess Championship match was very well organised but spectators were only allowed to attend the playing venue for 15 minutes and after that they could watch games in a spacious hall with commentary in both English and Chinese. There was a well equipped press room with various games provided and of course Chinese tea, coffee and other refreshments.
Thanks to the FIDE Team for looking after me.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
The Chess Career of Markus Wettstein by Ian Rogers published by Australian Chess Enterprises, 82 pages.
A tribute written to help celebrate the Australian/Swiss chess player on his 80th birthday.
This limited edition print run of 100 copies reveals a life well lived and a curiosity about chess that still lingers. The author has wisely provided a number of intriguing chess problems composed by Wettstein which are fiendishly difficult to solve. There are also various games from simultaneous displays against famous names such as Portisch, but also a sprinkling of Australian games. All of these are expertly annotated and reveal an understanding of the positions rather than displaying endless computer variations.
There are plenty of photos to reveal the characters behind the chess stories and we are introduced to his wife Carla Wettstein who sounds impressive and represented Switzerland at the Chess Olympiad. Rogers has been busy writing books in recent years with the acclaimed Terrey Shaw - Australian Chess Ironman and a number of titles for the American publisher Russell Enterprises with the latest tome called cheekily “The World’s Most Boring Chess Book”.
When we look back at history, the tendency is to see things through rose tinted glasses such as when Bobby Fisher refused to play the 1968 Lugano Olympiad, but occasionally quotes from Wettstein shake that illusion “However, I agreed with the organisers for not giving in to Fischer’s demands, and we were all glad when he left; he could have overshadowed the whole event with his tantrums.” He also played a future English grandmaster in Europe during 1973. His view on the encounter is clear “I had a close game with Raymond Keene, but he was so arrogant in the post-game analysis that I lost interest in it afterwards.”
Rogers assures me that he added a joke/pun in the text, but you will have a hard job finding it, so the hint is that it is on page 12, and I think there is no danger of losing Ian to a standup comedian career.
A hugely entertaining tale of a chess player and composer who now calls Australia his home.
If you wish to purchase one of the remaining copies of the book, contact the author direct at gmianrogers@gmail.com.
Looking Back
1990: When chess appeared on an Australian Postage Stamp
Well, technically it is a pre-stamped envelope, not a stamp, but it is the only time chess has featured on an official Australian postage item.
Sacred Heart Hospice was founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1890 as Australia’s first hospice and part of St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. In 1990, Australia Post issued this postage stationery to recognise the centenary of hospice care in Australia. It features a game of chess and is a reminder of the benefits of our game in helping to retain an active mind as we age.
