FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.

2025 ACT Chess Championship
Willis Lo is the 2025 ACT Chess Champion, winning this year’s event with 6/7. In round 6 he defeated Masaki Horikawa before a 3-move draw in round 7 secured outright 1st. The win is the second title for Lo, after sharing the title in 2019. In 2nd place were CM Hui Li, CM Terrance Tang and FM Michael Kethro. on 5.5.
The 7-round event attracted a field of 56 players and saw exciting chess across the long weekend. Although the top 4 seeds occupied the top 4 places, most games saw them face strong resistance from lower rated opponents. Apart from the top places, the Under 1800 prize was shared between Tim Pearce, Matt Radisich and Leo Kuncoro, the Under 1650 prize was split between father and son duo of Lohit and Sanat Hegde, while Zhishuo Hunag won the prize for best FIDE unrated. George Winter 1943-2025
Roland Winter would like to let the chess community know that his father, George Winter, passed away on 13 May in Broken Hill, after a short illness. Chess was his life.
George was very active on the weekend circuit around 20 to 25 years ago and won a lot of rating prizes and sections. He was particularly good at rook and pawn endings, collecting a lot of points by outplaying his opponents in such positions. He was a regular player at Newcastle and Sydney events, as well as Doeberl and others. He was also a Scrabble champion.
His old friend John Curtis prepared this tribute for George: Youtube link

Congratulations to Ben Leong for convincingly winning the event with 5.5/6! Ben has now won the Bundaberg Open two years in a row. It was great to see the Bundaberg Chess Club champion Kevin Casey take out 2nd place all by himself on 5/5 - well done Kevin. Young 10-year-old Atash Iddon is a player to watch - he drew with Joel Leong in R1 and crushed Mark C Stokes like a bug in R4 - and it was Mark's birthday too! Martin did a top job as arbiter once again and the Bundaberg Chess Club Committee deserve a big round of applause for putting on such a friendly yet very competitive event - Thanks a million Martin, Phil, Peter, John and Elizabeth. Chess Kangaroo School
By IM Leonid Sandler
For more than two months along with other coaches I had the pleasure to work with female chess players who are beginners from some small developing chess federations.
The programme was called the Queen's Gambit Challenge and organised by FIDE Commission for Women's Chess. This dynamic training program is designed to support developing chess federations by increasing female participation and encouraging new federations to compete in the next Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan.
This virtual initiative aims to close the gender gap in competitive chess by providing a structured, supportive, and educational platform for beginner-level female players. The program consists of three stages, each covering essential chess fundamentals, advanced strategies, and mental preparation for tournament play.
Many memorable moments arise from the lessons and my favourite was a video of my student who finally beat her dad! I was very proud of her!
All students were very keen to analyse their games and regularly sent me materials to have a look.
Here are some quotes from my students.
"Thank you. I am just learning the game. The class has helped me."
"I want to especially thank you for your great coaching. I got to understand how to play better and improve my tactics.♟️👏💕”
"Thank you Leonid for taking your time and giving great tips."
I was very pleased to receive the attached certificate along with kind words from the Project Coordinator Tris-Ann Richards .
Please see the highlights below.
Dear Leonid,
I extend my deepest gratitude for your outstanding commitment, expertise, and passion throughout this initiative. Your contribution has been instrumental in making this program not only a success but a truly transformative experience for everyone involved.
The impact of your work goes beyond the chessboard. You've helped shape lives, opened minds, and created lasting memories. We could not have achieved this without you.
Thank you once again for being an essential part of this journey.
We look forward to working with you on future initiatives as we continue to grow the game and its life-changing potential.
With keen interest I will be following the progress of my students in the future.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
The Golden Age of Chess
1851-1886 by Robert Johnson, 540 pages. Height 30.5 cm x Width 21.5 cm x 3.5 cm thick
A glorious insight to an era when games were won with amazing sacrifices, defence was weak, and attacks were spectacular.
It is fair to say that the Australian author has self-published one hundred and twenty impressive looking hefty books as each one weighs over 2kg. If you know his previous work on Adolf Anderssen then you can expect similarly high-level publishing standards.
The basic aim is to present 110 entertaining games spanning the era from the London Internation in 1851 to the first World Championship match in 1886, there are also another ten Steinitz games after he became Champion.
It is worth pointing out that the notes to the games are taken from sources around the time the game was actually played. Therefore, often openings have odd looking comments associated with them because those lines have rapidly improved over the years. Indeed, Johnson has not turned on any computer software to see when the old masters went wrong which is probably a good idea, otherwise there would be too many notes.
I particularly like that there are plenty of diagrams at the critical moment so you can just about follow the game even without a board. Although the old master names might be recognised by some, such as Blackburne, Schallop and Zukertort, the best bit is that there are numerous black & white photos to bring these people to life, which I think really adds to the enjoyment of the games.
The perfect chess coffee table book.
Looking Back
The Australasian Computer Chess Championship
In July 1998, the first Australasian National Computer Chess Championship, (NC3) was held as part of the ANU Chess Festival. Previous events had involved humans vs commercial chess computers/programs, but apparently humans were put off by the increasing strength of the machines, so the event was changed to computer programs (non-commercial) only.
Held online, the event was organised by Shaun Press annually until 2006 (missing 2002), starting with eight entries, dropping to four in 2001, but with more than ten in 2003-6. The 1998 competition had seven Australian entries and one from New Zealand, and ended in a three-way tie for first between Lambchop (Peter McKenzie, NZ), Knightcap (Andrew Tridgell) and Wimpknight (Jon Baxter).
