FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.

Helping Rural Chess
Bob Cowley writes:
I think that there's scope for good chess players from our capital cities to enjoy boosting regional chess, via holidays in some country towns.
Recently I visited Mount Gambier, which has about 28,000 people. Its scenic attractions mainly relate to extinct volcanoes and underground caves. It's a very scenic SA farming town, with a well-established chess club.
Following emails with the club's Val Pylypenko, about 15 to 20 players, with a very good range of ages, came to my chess function. The club's venue is the town library.
I played short time handicap games, showed the folk a couple of humorous problems and answered questions. They tell me that it went very well.
Mount Gambier is in southeast SA, very near the Victorian border. Maybe there are good Victorian chess players who would enjoy doing something similar for that club.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
Learn from the Legends 2 by Mihail Marin
Published by Quality Chess, 390 pages.
A look at the games of chess heroes and discover how they can teach us to improve.
The basic idea is to select the favourite players of the Romanian author and offer annotated games and snippets of wisdom to educate and entertain. The chess stars are elite players from the past: Leonid Stein, Lev Polugaevsky, David Bronstein, Paul Keres and Lajos Portisch. I can see the attractions of the old stars as the modern generation are not so aware of their classic games. It seems that everyone has an opinion of Caruana and Nakamura, but Stein is likely to be an enigma.
As it is number two in the series, a few intrepid folks have insisted to me that they want to buy the first book, even though it was published in 2005. I can at least recommend the third edition that emerged in 2015, that featured an extra chapter on a new talent called Magnus.
Marin is a distinguished chess writer, and he maintains his high reputation with plenty of prose to explain the examples rather than deluge the page with endless computer moves. At the end of each chapter there are eight difficult puzzles. There is no room for a checkmate in two, but complex positions where you have to choose the right plan or tactical sequence. This gives the author another chance to provide eight mini-lessons on how to convert an advantage into a victory.
I particularly liked the black and white photos so we can put a face to the grandmasters, which might seem a small matter but is so often overlooked by publishers.
A thoughtful way to help play distinguished chess at a higher level.
Looking Back
A Chess Set is Forever
By Bob Meadley
Unless the owner decides they are old or broken and not worth keeping. I bought a 19th century set in 1980 for $50 from a UK dealer. I could not afford a good set but wanted the link to the old days. The plain or ribbed barleycorn set that came was exactly what I ordered and could not be played with as most pieces could not stand. Recently I stuck the major pieces together for a scan wanted by Chess Collectors International (CCI) on a favourite set. They are made of bone and I wish they could speak of previous owners and places they have been. Here they are:
Ebay has many sets for sale and recently a dirty and tired looking set came up for $50. No-one had bid so I did and they are now here. The veneer box with chess board was fraying so that was reglued and minor veneer added. The pieces were then washed in warm water and soap then dried and oiled with teak oil. It was a Polish set with copper metal inlay on the bases as on the board. Clearly post war and probably the 60s. Here is a scan:
The Kings and Queens are like large Bishops, but the Bishops have opposite-coloured heads. The White King & Queen are upside down in the centre and mid RHS. Again, it would be great to know who played with them in the past.
The final set is a matryoshka set made in Russia, probably Brest Belarus in the 70s. There is a good old video of the master women carvers and painters making these men. My set has been repainted on the bodies and heads with more fine work yet to be done. They cost $75. Board included. Again, these men have had very hard work in the past judging by the paintwork done. I am not very interested in the normal chessmen.
There is a thriving market on many websites. For another $50, I bought a “Dragon” set missing a piece and have ordered the pawn from ChessHouse USA. The postage was $20 the pawn $10! As for Ebay auctions, I have lost many but that is the game. I believe Irving Finkel the curator at the British Museum swears that the Lewis chessmen speak to him but mine have never spoken to me. I like sets but am too old to collect now, The sets bought were prompted by contact with Ross Jackson of New Zealand and Holger Langer of Germany. His latest book “On the Art of Collecting Chess Sets” is a beauty.
