ACF MEDALS & AWARDS - NOMINATIONS INVITED
Australian Players-of-the-Year 2025
Nominations are invited for potential winners of the following medals, to be awarded to Australian players who have made the greatest impact during 2025. Recipients are offered financial assistance to participate in significant forthcoming national or international events.
Steiner Medal and Steiner-Holt Award – Australian Player of the Year 2025
This medal is to be awarded to the Australian player who has made the greatest impact, not necessarily the highest-rated – it is for the most notable achievement during 2025. There is no limit to the number of times the Steiner or the Viner medal may be won by the same player.
Viner Medal & Award – Australian Senior Player of the Year 2025
On the same basis as the Steiner Medal, the Viner Medal is limited to nominees born in or before 1975.
Arlauskas Medal & Romanas Arlauskas Award – Australian Under-16 Player of the Year 2025
The Arlauskas Medal, also awarded on the same basis as the Steiner Medal, is limited to nominees born in or after 2009. The Arlauskas Medal and Romanas Arlauskas Award may not be won by the same person more than twice.
Previous recipients are listed at https://auschess.org.au/honour-boards/
Koshnitsky Medal
Nominations are also invited for the Koshnitsky medal, awarded annually for outstanding contributions to Australian chess administration at a national or a state level. The medal is a lifetime achievement award, not limited to accomplishments or services during a particular period and not awarded more than once to the same person. Links to lists of previous recipients may be seen at: https://auschess.org.au/honour-boards/

Nominations need not be from among a State's own members or residents. A separate document or message containing the following should be provided in respect of each nominee:
• name in full (correctly spelt); • contact details (phone, email, postal address);

FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.
ACF FUNDING SUPPORT PROGRAM
The application deadline for activities commencing between 1 March 2026 and 30 August 2026 is 31 December 2025. Application forms and related information are available on request to executive@auschess.org.au.

2025 ACT Junior Chess Championship
By Shaun Press (chessexpress)
Congratulations to Sanat Hegde for winning the 2025 ACT Junior Chess Championship. He scored an amazing 8.5/9, with ACT Girls Junior Champion Sahasra Selva the only player to take a half point off him. Amazingly, Hegde was eligible for the Under 8 section (having turned 8 this year). He won the ACT Under 10 Championship the previous weekend (it was a combined Under 8/10 event), but curiously, was runner up in the Under 12 Championship. Masaki Horikawa finished 2nd in the championship (winning the Under 16 title), with Nivin Vinothkumar 3rd and Owen MacMullin 4th.

Chess in Papua New Guinea
By Shaun Press
After 48 years away (no, really) I went back to Port Moresby (albeit for a short visit). Catching up with the chess organisers in Port Moresby was great fun, and important, and I’m pleased to say, things are on the move.
The first day, I was invited to play some games at Chess In Da Hood which is an outdoor chess meetup in Gerehu. A couple of tables were set up under a very bright streetlight, and around 12 players turned up to play. The quality of chess was quite good (around 1600 or about the halfway seeding at Canberra Street Chess) and I spent most of my games fighting off attacks from gambit openings. I faced King’s Gambits, Albin Counter Gambits, Scotch Gambits and even in the more solid openings (Ruy Lopez and Quiet Italians) I still had to deal with some early h4 attacks. Tactically my opponents were pretty sharp, but I was able to survive due to better king safety and having more sound positions.

PNG Street Chess
Next day, I gave an Arbiters/Organisers seminar, with about 30 attendees. On the Sunday, with the assistance of PNGCF President Tom McCoy, I ran a small rapid play event in Port Moresby. Despite the very short notice (24 hours) a good field of 24 players turned up to play. The venue was the South Pacific Motor Sports Club, which provided excellent facilities for the event. As most players did not have ratings it was seeded based on volunteered chess.com ratings. As it turned out the estimates were pretty good, based on the finishing positions.
It was a seven-round event, with a time limit of G/10m. The winner was Victor Ahulo who finished on 6/7. In 2nd was Adrian Chamilou on 5.5, with Jireh Mileng, Liberty Joku and Nickson Lahui tied for 3rd on 5. Adrian was the best placed junior, while Liberty was the best female player.
The quality of chess was quite good. I played a casual game against one of the local juniors, who had arrived too late for the event, and was lucky to escape with a draw.

2025 PNG Car Club Classic
All in all, this is quite promising for upcoming events. There are a couple of goals for PNG chess in 2026. A revamped national championship is on the cards, and hopefully a 2026 PNG Open will be organised around August/September. The PNGCF plan to send players to the Oceania Youth Championship in Brisbane later this year, while potential teams for the 2026 Chess Olympiad are taking shape. With the large number of female players taking part in events, PNG should be able to enter a female team for the first time.

Book Review

The How to Study Chess on Your Own Workbook, Volume 3
Exercises and Training for Ambitious Chess Players by Davorin Kuliasevic, published by New In Chess, 232 pages.
A training course devised with the ability of a 2100 player who wants to be even better.
This might be volume 3 in a series of How To Study Chess on Your Own, but you don’t have to read the other titles because they are aimed at different levels of ratings such as beginners and club players.
The Croatian author in his latest work is aiming for high level studies to test and tease his audience. The plan is to target typical weaknesses at that level which he pinpoints as “short-sighted plans, not proficient with pawn structures and their transformations, simplifying positions to their detriment, not using prophylactic thinking enough..” If that sounds familiar then you don’t even need to be rated 2100 to enjoy and value the insights on how to be good.
The chapter headings such as ‘Typical Mistakes of Ambitious Tournament Players’ and ‘Visualization Bootcamp’ give a hint that this is next level analysis rather than a series of checkmate in two puzzles.
Kulijasevic likes to show a training position full of possibilities and then deeply annotate them with calculations, but also plenty of observations. The latter is important because plenty of prose to explain the right plan of attack and defence is interesting. I found the middlegame training chapter particularly illuminating with the chat about ‘Find a Mini-plan (FMP) a useful way of negotiating tricky positions which require immediate action.
There are various exercises dotted around the chapters to keep the reader entertained. The difference is that instead of a short solution featuring a couple of moves, it is replaced by a chess investigation on how to understand the position in order to flag which plan to adopt.
A masterclass on how to improve your chess.
Looking Back
The Original & the Repro ACF Chessmen
By Bob Meadley
When the original WW2 Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) chessmen went out to the troops in 1943 the “Made in Australia” brand was low key but now we look for it on all antiques.
The patent-holder and designer, the late Karl Bittman (The Transponder Company) was driven out of Austria by the Anschluss in 1938 and had copied from a German set made by the sculptor Ludwig Zacherl. If the set has a claim to fame it is with the Knights that have a merged neck and body very rare in the design of this piece (see below). The others are fairly standard with a King 5.5cm in height.
C.J.S. Purdy bought the remnants from the army in 1946 (in wooden boxes) and sold them to youngsters and families at 85c/set. The sturdy cardboard box is 16.5 cm long, 6 cm high and 10.2cm wide with 2 compartments for the white and black men. The Kings do not have the “ACF” initials under their bases as shown on the ACF website but the sets given to the troops had those initials on them. Either way the design is the same and it may be postwar the sets were sold without initials. There are 3 sets known, one in New Zealand (No ACF under the bases), another in Melbourne (with ACF under the bases and a box initialed ACF.) and mine (missing 2 BP’s) in Narromine which was bought for $102.50 last week. (See left scan)
I bought the Repro set from Chess Bazaar India a few months earlier for $330 and the scans show the large size of the men (WK 9 cm) with the Knight keeping the merged neck & body form. They are well finished in 2 woods: Sheesham (dark) & Boxwood (white). They came very well packed in foam and a box was made to hold them in standing position. They have ACF under the Kings only and are classy pieces for the modern market.
The box below has the words “Modern Chessmen” on the top of the cover but very badly faded.
This set is an original 1943/5 set sent to the troops. It was in Melbourne.

WW2 ACF Knight on the left (4cm high). Bazaar Knight on the right (6.2 cm high).
