Any inquiries can be sent to ACF Juniors Coordinator, Mr Hui Lam Teh tehhuilam@gmail.com, with cc to ACF Selections Director Tom Saltmarsh selections_director@auschess.org.au.
FIDE RATING SUBMISSIONS
Note that events for FIDE ratings that are completed in the last seven days of the month need to be submitted to ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos for ratings immediately so that any issues with them can be resolved in time for events to be rated in that month. Also note that intended changes of names or dates of FIDE-rated events need to be notified immediately as they may affect the event's rating status. Note also that all FIDE rated events must be submitted for ACF ratings – no exceptions.
FIDE RATED EVENT REGISTRATION
Australian tournaments to be FIDE rated must be advised to the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer at least 40 days prior to the start of the tournament for tournaments where norms are available and at least 7 days prior to the start of the tournament for all other tournaments. Where these conditions are not met, the decision whether to register it or not is solely at the discretion of the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer.
FIDE ID NUMBER REGISTRATION
FIDE has issued a warning that they will not accept tournaments for FIDE rating where those tournaments contain players who do not have FIDE ID numbers. Although new Australian players can be registered by the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer, this does not apply to new players from overseas. Therefore, organisers should not immediately accept the entries of overseas players who lack FIDE ID numbers to FIDE rated tournaments; instead, those players should be required to first obtain a FIDE ID from their own national federation.
Tournaments submitted that include foreign players who do not have ID numbers end up not being FIDE rated. Organisers need to confirm prior to the start of the tournament that all players without a FIDE ID number are either Australian citizens or have a permanent residency visa.
Players without ID numbers should only be submitted as Australian if they are citizens or are a permanent residency visa holder; if a player is registered under the wrong country, they may incur transfer costs later. For further information/clarification contact the ACF FIDE Ratings Officer Bill Gletsos via fide_ratings@auschess.org.au.
ACF FUNDING SUPPORT PROGRAM
The application deadline for activities commencing between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027 is 30 June 2026. Application forms and related information are available on request to executive@auschess.org.au.

Australasian Masters
From reporting by Paul Power
The Australasian Masters 2025 Chess Tournament ended with Chris Wallis, 35, and Albert Winkelman, 22, tied for first place, undefeated on through the nine-round invitational event at the Melbourne Chess Club. After drawing their head-to-head encounter in round 3, each went on to score a total of five wins and four draws.
Round 9 saw Wallis (Black) playing a Sicilian Defence to Alexej Khamatgaleev, arriving at the same position after 8. Bxd4
as Sergey Karjakin vs Daniil Dubov, World Rapid Championship, Berlin, 2015, where Dubov continued 8... b5, Wallis 8... Ne7. There followed a Queen exchange on 9. Qg3 Qxg3 10. hxg3, then 10... b5 11. Bc5 Nc6 12. Bxf8 Kxf8 13. O-O-O Ke7 with both Kings safe.
By 21... Nc4
Black had achieved equality.
White captured Black’s h-pawn, 32. Rxh6
but Black’s pieces were aimed at White’s King, threatening ... Rc3 with an invasion aimed at White’s g-pawn. There followed 32... Nd4 33. Bd1 Rc3 34. fxe5 34... dxe5
as it turned out, a critical position. Black has the aggressive setup, but White can defend with 35. Nf1 Bc6 36. Ne3 f6 37. Nf5+ Nxf5 38. exf5.
But, instead, White, down to 3 minutes 30 seconds, thought for 20 seconds and played 35. Rh7 allowing 35... Rxg3. But then 36. Nc4 Bxc4 37. bxc4 allowing 37... b3
and suddenly White’s King shelter collapses. And on 38. c3 Rg2+ and a Checkmating net falls on White. Finally, 39. Kb1 Nc2 40. Bxc2 bxc2+ 41. Ka1 Ra8+
White resigns as 42. Kb2 c1=Q+ 43. Kxc1 Ra1#
Event organiser, Leonid Sandler reported that both Wallis and Winkelman earned International Master norms from this event.

Aussies Overseas #3
Paul Summers reports on the activities of Australians overseas for events finishing in December. All ratings are FIDE. Games from these events, usually with crosstables, can be found on the Australian Chess web page.
This report features twenty-two Australian players competing in overseas tournaments ending in December (plus some extras from the end of November):
GM David Smerdon (QLD 2476) played in the 3rd Rahulians International Rating Chess Festival in Sri Lanka, in a 150-player classical swiss, scoring 10/10.
FM Daniel Melamed (NSW 2116) played in the 420-player Jerusalem Open, a rapid event of 15 mins and 5 secs per move over 9-rounds and two days. Daniel scored 6/9 placing 44= and was defeated by GM Lucas van Foreest (2471) in the second round but had the satisfaction of finishing ahead of the GM by half-a-point. In the last round Daniel defeated Austrian IM Olga Badelka (2238).
GM Bobby Cheng (VIC 2596) competed in the second round of the Bundesliga, the German Team Championship. Playing for SV Werder Bremen in Düsseldorf, Bobby lost to GM L’Ami (NED 2616) with the white pieces, then with the black pieces drew with GM Kobalia (FIDE 2531)
Playing in Sant Boi Spain in the 2025 El Llobregat Open #6 in the A Group, were Lachlan Wang (QLD 1915) and Rudra Verma (NSW 1978). The competition was tough with the field largely comprising titled players. Lachlan scored 4/10 and Rudra 3.5, placing 89= and 103=. Rudra knocked the Kazakhstan players around with a draw against WGM Alua Nurman (2344) and a win against WIM Elnaz Kaliakhmet (2274). Both Australians achieved admirable performance ratings of 2043 and 2120 respectively.
Tim Harris (QLD 2069) competed in the 2025 Witney Open #12 a short 5-rounder in England. Tim was undefeated until the last round, where he fell to Arya Cont (ENG 2203) on Board 2, finishing on 3/5.
CM Micah Young (QLD 2019) played in the 12th Sunway Sitges in Spain with 241 other players. He placed 66=, losing only two games (one to a WGM), drawing five and winning three.
IM Rishi Sardana (ACT 2459) won the 2025 Forintos Gyozo Memorial GM-C in Budapest Hungary outright. He was the top-rated player in the event, which included three GMs and 5 IMs. Rishi defeated all but one GM and one IM, performing at 2549.
Thailand resident Peter Frost (1756) competed in the 98-player 2025 Penang Open #17 in Malaysia, scoring 3/9 and finishing in 78= place.
Eleven New South Welshmen and a lone Queenslander headed north to participate in the 129-player Hong Kong International Open. Samuel Asaka (2195) would have been very pleased with his result finishing on 6/9 in equal ninth place and performing just ahead of GM Zong Yuan Zhao (2442) on the same score. Yuan was undefeated until the last round, when he will have been disappointed to lose with the white pieces to GM Jacek Stopa, who has been a recent regular prizemoney finisher in Australian tournaments. Harvey Zhu (2208) and FM Yifei Hu (2151) each scored 5.5 finishing in 23= place. Fifty percenters John Papantoniou (2063) and Yuan Huang (2014) placed 56= on 4.5. John missed Round 6. A third of the Australians finished on 4/9 and 74=: CM Brendan Anderson (2010); Matthew Jia (QLD 1774); Harry Ruan (1972) and CM Lucas Ni (2003). Matthew missed Round 1. Ian Stalker (1959) made 3.5 and 93=, while at the tail Dean Chen (1908) scored 3.0 in 106= place.
In Doha Qatar, IM James Morris (VIC 2377 rapid and 2446 blitz) competed in the 2025 World Rapid and Blitz events. In the 247-player rapid, James scored 5.5/13 placing 173= with a performance rating with which he would not be happy. Things did not improve in the blitz which followed the rapid on the next day. Here, competing with 252 players, James forfeited in Round 14 and did not play Rounds 18 and 19. He finished on 6.5 in 229= place.

Book Review
By IM Gary Lane
Powerhouse Pawn Sacrifices by Van Cheparinov, published by Quality Chess, 216 pages.
A series of lessons on how to improve by sacrificing a pawn or two.
The Bulgarian grandmaster starts each chapter with numerous diagrams and the proposal is to think of a suitable plan. The author then examines each game and explains how to proceed with ease and especially if a pawn sacrifice is forthcoming.
An interesting aspect is that a number of openings are closely examined such as the Queen’s Gambit Declined, Catalan, Advance French and the Queen’s Indian. The main reason being that these are openings played by Cheparinov so he can offer significant insight on how make progress I such positions. I think that even if you don’t play these lines there is enough general guidance to make it transferable knowledge in similar positions. It can only improve your middlegame and positional prowess.
The final chapter titled “How do the Greats do it?” is a good excuse to demonstrate brilliant games by Caruana, Kasparov and Topalov. A great way to improve your decision making.
Looking Back
DIRECTOR’S SWIFT ACTION ENDS AMAZING INCIDENT
A burst of whistling broke the grim silence of the Australian Chess Championship yesterday. Players started from Yogi-like brooding over gambits, and the Director of Play (Mr. Harry Huffle), hunted out the culprit. He was discovered still whistling absent-mindedly in a corner of the roof-garden, and sternly silenced. “The man was a well-known chess player, and should have known better,” declared Mr. Huffle, indignantly. “There must be complete silence when games are being played. “Some of the players are very irritable. They complain if there is a draught from a window or if spectators whisper.”
Temperaments Differ
“I can’t bear a table that wiggles,” confessed Mr. F. A. Crowle (N.S.W.) “I nearly went through the ceiling when a flashlight photograph was taken,” said Mr. A. W. Gyles (N.Z.). Mr. Martin Green (Vic.) is the exception to the rule. “I play better when there are people around, and nothing upsets me,” he said. Shirt sleeves were popular among the players yesterday: one wore an eye-shade, and the youngest player, 19-year-old M. C. Salm (Queensland) chewed gum.
